EL ESCAPE DE LOS SANTOS is an independent feature film inspired by a true story. Andres De Los Santos, A young man who by mistake gets caught with hunting rifles while crossing into Mexico is sentenced to 10 years in federal prison. The rifles were registered in the United States and more importantly in Mexico.
Andres discovers that the Mexican judicial system is extremely flawed. There are no juries, no testimony and your are guilty until proven innocent.
Andres has one choice. Escape.
His escape left everyone baffled. No one could even guess how he did it. Until now.
Our mission is to inspire change in the way Mexico handles their judicial system. This film could understandably be misjudged as being Anti-Mexico. It is not. Mexico is where I, Ricardo Mendoza, was born and raised. I have family and friends all over this great republic.
Sadly, Mexico's judicial system is outdated and very arbitrary. Compared to other modern countries where they would allow testimony from witnesses and physical evidence shown in court to let a jury decide the defendant's fate, Mexico's system is based on formal documents presented to a judge in a closed private setting. The formal documents contain the details of the alleged crime. Based on this, the judge decides whether you are guilty or not. Also keep in mind that you are guilty upon arrest, and you are there to prove to the judge that you are innocent.
This film was made because we love Mexico, and we are not trying to exploit faults. The stories portrayed were inspired by actual events, and are simply stating what went on during Andres's arrest and imprisonment. On the contrary what we want to accomplish with this is to change and make people realize that there is something wrong.
President of Mexico Vicente Fox just recently vocalized his intention to change the nation in a positive way. "Our proposal will consist that the current penal system should be more transparent, equal, oral and more public." Fox stated. "Mexicans observe that there are crimes that do not get punished and at the same time, there are people who suffer punishments they do not deserve."
We hope that one day, Mexico's judicial system will be transparent, equal, oral and more open. Our movie will try to reinforce that there is something wrong and hopefully help in trying to accomplish a better future for a great nation.
